After 8 September 1943, he formed the first partisan groups in Ivrea. As a wanted man, he went into hiding, joined the Partito d&#8217;Azione and, thanks to his mountaineering skills, helped groups of Jews and Anglo-American prisoners to expatriate to Switzerland.
