In 1982, Olivetti introduced the M20, the first European personal computer. To promote it to a still largely unprepared audience, the company relied heavily on advertising communication, presenting it as an accessible and useful tool for everyday life and professional activities, even for those without specific technological skills. Emblematic of this approach was the slogan “1984: Orwell was wrong,” a reference to George Orwell and his dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. With an ironic and reassuring tone, the message overturned that imagery: the M20 was not a threat to humanity, but a simple and useful tool at people’s disposal.
